Beck stepped forward and held the Beagle’s hips as Danae used a scope to inspect its ears. So far, five hours of the work day were completed and no new threats appeared. Having to stand back and wait for instructions wasn’t much different from what he’d done in the military. Sure, the team trained so their timing was right. But they’d also had long periods of waiting to gear up for a mission.

Last night, after he’d ended that kiss and endured her confused expression, Beck couldn’t sleep. He figured he should have explained his reason, but he enjoyed getting to know her and didn’t want her to look at him as anything but a whole man. He’d spent an hour studying the background file Hank supplied and verifying it with information he could find on the Internet. Hank’s report was thorough. Beck figured she must have a clue about who was behind her current troubles.

While she slept, he’d snuck into her room to install a tracking device inside her cell phone. Hopefully, no situation would arise where it was needed, but he believed in being prepared for any possibility. On purpose, he’d avoided looking at the bed for fear he’d be tempted to crawl under the covers, next to her warm body.

“I got it.” Danae straightened and held something on the end of a pair of thin forceps.

“Another foxtail?” The gray-haired man leaned forward in his chair.

“That’s right, Mike.” She scratched the brown and white dog under his chin. “Roger will be feeling better right away.” She glanced at Beck and nodded.

Beck lifted the dog down to the floor.

The frisky dog ran to his owner.

“You rascal.” Mike clipped a leash onto Roger’s collar then stood. “I can’t keep him out of the field behind our place.”

“Understandable. Dogs are meant to roam. I’m glad the solution was an easy one.” Danae escorted the man and dog to the reception area before returning to the counter and set the used instruments she’d used on a tray for delivery to the back room.

Her action was Beck’s clue to grab the supplies and clean the table. He’d hoped to use these small breaks to ask her questions. Unfortunately, she was always focused on a task related to the previous client or the next. No denying her dedication was admirable, but not being proactive about gathering intel didn’t sit well. He itched for something substantive that earned him a permanent spot on Hank’s team.

The walkie-talkie on her hip squawked. “Doc, please pick up line two.”

Danae moved into the procedure room and lifted the receiver from the wall phone. “Doctor Orestes speaking.”

Beck followed and put his good ear near her head. From what he could understand, a dog struggled to birth a litter, her first one. Standing so close and smelling her citrusy scent was a distracting. He eased away and clasped his hands behind him. He’d heard enough to know the caller was known to the lady vet and not a threat.

She hung up. “We have to go to a ranch about ten miles away.
